They were having a fabric and light show on the Hawthorne Bridge and it didn't go well. Before the 10pm light show I could something wrong already. The bridge lights were on, As you can see the fabric doesn't really light up to well when very bright and way bigger orange bridge lights illuminate the fabric more then a small string of LED lights...booo

Two different flashes 1 umbrella 1/2 power to give some light of the models then the second was snooted on the bar top shooting the glass at I think 1/2 power. using the new pocket wizards mini and flex. This was one of the last shots so I can't really remember to much of what was going on. at that point. BUT i think it turned out pretty good. When I look at it I don't know if the first flash even flashed.

Earth Hour, to bring awareness to our climate. By turning off Non-Essential lights for 1 hour it helps open the eyes of doing little means a lot. This is from 7p to 10p in downtown Portland. From what I noticed, 1 building turned lights off and that was just 4 fancy lights. Oh by the way, Portland is the greenest city in America

This was a fantastic fun afternoon. Despite the almost California rain we were having that day and the winners standing in it an extra 40 minutes everyone seemed to be having a fantastic time. All but one girl, while walking around I heard her say "i'm so drunk". Just by looking at her you could tell. 10 minutes later she ran past me almost falling many times. Last week I have been going through some of the old photo's to see if I see anything different this time then the night or morning that I took the photo. It's amazing to find something and try some post processing that you have learned to see how a photo turns out. I have only gone through a couple thousand with a lot more to check out. I can't wait to see what I took that I don't remember. ha.

the season for the sunrise

There is nothing like a sunrise during the winter season. Amazing clouds that are so boring during the daylight hours it's hard to imagine they start the day out like this. Of course during the summer white puff clouds are pretty but during the sunrise, they don't live up to the hype. I will never get tired of waking up an hour before sunrise way before I need to be up just to get a peek. Some mornings I do get up and peek out the window and see nothing, maybe fog or maybe rain but some day's it's perfect. The crazy thing is every good sunrise doesn't have a good sun "rise". The first couple times watching the sunrise happen you kind of expect a very bright sun to finish the sunrise process. I don't want a bright sun, I want thin weak clouds to cover the sky, it's how the orange happens. I could go on and on about the sunrise photo's from my living room. I get to cheat, I don't have to have clothes on, I don't have to stand out in the cold. I'm a cheater.

It amazing how when you least expect it things go crazy and when you have all your hopes up it when it all goes wrong or nothing happens at all. This weekend I had hopes to do some picture taking with the forecast saying it was going to be sunny and decent. I woke up this morning and it was foggy and freakin' cold. The high today was 42 and that happened at 11:30pm. odd. This picture is from last weekend and we were forecasted to have the same weather as this weekend. boo.. I guess we'll see what happens tomorrow, fog anyone?

It was pretty cool to see a rail contest up close this weekend. It was the 2nd annual backyard bang. It was kind of a slow contest being that it was the first time in months that some of these kids had hit the snow..but still fun to watch people eat it.

It doesn't take long before you miss a great thing. Do you start to miss what you have but what you will not? Next year the GF and I will be living together but not in my apartment. The apartment with the killer view, the killer roof and the killer view. I'm ok with it but I will miss the great sunrise view that I do have. The perfect height, the perfect depth into downtown and of course in the perfect city. I think moving will make me a better photographer. It doesn't take much on a regular basis to roll out of bed and take a photo. It's like camping in the perfect spot 365 days a year and having the option to try something new every day. I'm ready to move to a different location, a location that will make me think and prepare for the conditions of the day. Until then I'm going to enjoy every morning out my window in our perfect city.

It was amazing to see the storm front move in like it did. I didn't even notice the black clouds at first when I was doing work stuff until this loud boom happened. I looked over my shoulder and noticed a huge wall of black down the way, but it was blue and pretty over head. crack, boom another invisible lightning strike during the day made me think, how can I get a good photo of the clouds and blue sky. Being in Woodburn made it difficult since it's flat and no chance to drive up a "the" hill for a better view around the light polls and cars. I did get some normal driving shots with the parted blue sky and black but it didn't do any justice to the craziness of this.

I have all my grandma's slides numbers reaching around 1700 of them. I have scanned however 300 plus so far. I plan on making her a blurb book for christmas. I know, i have had the pictures 3 years and hadn't scanned one photo until now. But when it takes 1 minute per slide it will take time and I have 6 weeks but need it ordered now.
I'll be posting a photo here and there of my favorite. This is a fav so far of the loose slides. My grandpa died before I was 9 I could of been 8. It's hard to remember. I did cry a little when I saw this because Uncle Ed is acting like a spaz. Aunt Toni is so young. Uncle John has his eyes closed. My grandma is smiling and my grandpa is alive. Then we have my mom, who seemed to be pissed in every photo. But she was an angry teenager, ha ha. But the whole family is happy and I never saw it. I'm the first grandchild. This is why I like photography. captured time, for you and your future beings.

Saturday's sunrise was fantastic. It's doesn't come right behind Mt. Hood often. Plus it was a suprise. Usually you can track it and notice where it will hit but this time it was perfect. I have caught the moon in a similar area but the sun is so much more fantastic.

I recently did a Mt Hood Adventure tour with the Girlfriend and out of all the 400 pics that I took this is beyond my favorite. I love how the Mountain isn't full, kind of hidden behind the clouds. LOVE LOVE LOVE

Portland Soapbox Derby

I love the soapbox derby. It's one of the only day's of the year that I try not to miss. It's like opening day for baseball, the first NFL game of the year. Or when I was under 18, thats year playmate of the year. This is my forth year of going . Here are pics from 2006, 2007 and of course this years photo's. I tried to do some panning shots this year and they didn't turn out so bad. If you look through the photo's you can totally tell that I have grown as a photographer. The first year I had the canon 20d I just click, click, click. Now it's more of a thought out, click, click, click. ha ha ha.

This Saturday is Portland's Adult Soapbox Derby at Mt. Tabor. This will be my 4th that I will be attending and 3rd that I'll be pushing a car 25 feet to start. It is a blast attending. I love it. It's one of just a couple days out of the year that I truly love and look forward to. Not only do I have a ton of friends that will be there and will be participating, it's just a fun thing to enjoy. Plus you can easily take a million photo's in the 5 hours the event happens.

TIP: It starts at 10 but teams show up at sunrise to get a close stop towards the front for the most room and coverage. I'll be there around 7.

This place was amazing, Palouse Falls. It's in the middle of nowhere of eastern Washington. This place gets put back on the list of places to go because next time camping is the way to go. Then we would of had enough time to hike and explore. Plus it would help if it wasn't 90 degrees out. Yeah, water is at the bottom. Yeah, it's also up hill on the way back.

I sometimes wish I grew up on a farm. So I could of had odd farm stories to tell. Maybe the time the cow got out or that accident with the combine. Not really. I live downtown for a reason. Even my girlfriend loves being this close to town and she lives few blocks outside of downtown. I sometimes have to house/dog sit for my parents who live 20 ish miles outside the city and I can't take it. I love driving very little and being around everything. Even though I love driving. I think the thought of me growing up on a farm has something to do with Clark Kent at the Kent farm. Either way, this farm house is 15 miles outside the city, 20 feet from the major freeway "I-5" So it's not really outside the city, I could do this. But not really, My allergies would go insane.

It took me way to long to find a replacement for my lost..eyecup? That was the problem, I call this an eyepiece. Amazon didn't have anything, I was a little confused. Of course I didn't look in the manual to see that it is called an eyepiece and it attaches to the viewfinder eyepiece. That and Camera World told me it would take 4 weeks and it cost 40 bucks. I told them no and I would buy it from somewhere else. I did, I finally looked in my B&H catalog. Around 10 buck I could get a replacement in as little as 1 working day. I am never going to Camera World and Shutterbug is getting there. Wouldn't help me for 2 seconds but for 10 minutes standing at the counter wouldn't look over from showing a guy a lens that he wasn't going to buy.

Portland is an odd place. Around town we have roads that are near dirt status with more pot holes then what any hybrid can handle. Which means throughout Portland we have little horse rings still attached to the sidewalks from the good old days. A group from www.horseproject.net have been attaching horses to the rings for years. But not any horse, but TINY horses that you can get at dollar stores. On the website they talk about places you can see them, where they have been in the past, How to and theives. If you are around town look down when in SE or downtown. You might be suprised. You can find more at the flickr page for the horses.

I have a fancy printer that does 13x19 prints and I love it. I can look at my photo's all day online or on my computer at home but seeing them big and printed out is so pretty. Of course 4x6 is nice and convenient and easy to get from any drug or food store.

I print out a lot of my stuff but I don't have any of it on my own walls in my apartment. It's odd, I love giving them out as presents to family and friends. What I have on my walls now is "Squid" oriented art that I have purchased on the internets, mostly from Etsy's.

BUT, today I saw something of mine in a local paper mag that prints up a Guide to Portland Magazine once a year. It's about a 5x7 photo and it looks really good, I think it's ok when I look at it on flickr and right here. But it looks really good in the mag, maybe because I got paid for it but if I can give you advice, print your work, LARGE. Unless you take crappy photo's it will look good printed up.

Someone who works for Ripley's Believe It or Not! contacted me about using a photo for their upcoming book. Yeah I know, what! What could a person who never seems to leave the city take a photo of that could be in Ripley's book?

How about a picture of the worlds smallest city park!

I guess I'll know in the next couple months if it gets added to the next book coming out. Fingers crossed.

A few weeks ago the so called mascot "Timber Jim" retired from the Portland Timbers. He was more of a motivational tool then a so called mascot. Even though we have a huge super fan section 107, he was like the crazy uncle that just wanted you to keep going. I found him very interesting in an insane way. Not in a way that would make you annoyed but just the flip thing he would do. Everything is perfect, his use of a chain saw to slice away a slab of wood every time we scored a goal to his drum beating and tree climbing. But I never understood his forward hand summersault thing. He gave the team a face, a reaction, a way to do it and made everything fun. I enjoy the games, I enjoy hanging with friends and getting excited about a team like I did in high school. I don't know if the new guy will cut it or not but I would of gave a game of rest.

Why bring in the replacement in the next game. We don't really need anyone to lead a chant, we have enough crazy hipsters to do that. I never understood that about sports, you gave the guy a half time lovefest. He received his game tickets for life and team autographed jersey. But giving us the one game off with no one would of been sweet. I don't know if he was at the game or not and it's not that big of a deal but I think the section 107 would of done just fine with a logger cutting wood for one game.
